X-10 has for some time sold a screw-in Lamp Module but unfortunately its large size prohibited it from fitting in many types of light fixtures. Unlike other X-10 modules, the new LM15A Remote Controlled Screw-in Lamp Module has no code wheels. This allows for a very compact design. It is just 2 ½ inches long and 1 ¼ inches in diameter, with a 3/8 of an inch bump on one side.
LM15A.jpg (5468 bytes)Its code is set up from any X-10 controller and it then remembers this code, even if the power fails. You simply screw it into any light fixture, screw in a bulb, turn the power on, and then send it a code from any X-10 Controller. You send the same code three times. When the LM15A receives the same code for the third time it turns on to let you know that it has “learned” the code. It then remembers this code indefinitely, even if the power fails. To “teach” the LM15A a new code, you just remove the power, reapply it, and then send it the new code three times.
The fact that the LM15A remembers the code even after the power is removed means that you can set up the code in any convenient indoor lamp and then move the module to its final location, which might be in an outside light fixture for example. This means you don’t have to install it outside and then run in and out of the house while setting it up. The LM15A does not have any dimming functions, allowing it to be small, but the primary use for this module is to control outside lights, walk-in closet lights, garage lights operated by a pull-chain, etc. and therefore dimming will not normally be a useful feature. It also does not have local control, but this is not normally required for these applications.
If dimming or local control is desired, the WS467 Wall Switch Module should be used. The LM15A lets you turn on and off ceiling lights or outdoor lights by remote control from any X-10 controller. Lights can also be set to go on and off at a preset time or even go on automatically at dusk, using one of X-10’s timers or dusk sensors. The LM15A Screw-in Lamp Module screws into an existing light socket before you screw in the bulb, eliminating the need to rewire switch operated lights. It is rated at 150W for incandescent lamps and it is water resistant so it can be used indoors and outdoors.
