Which technologies do your products use to communicate with each other and how does it work?

M1 system components such as keypads, expansion modules and serial integration interfaces communicate via the M1 RS-485 data bus.   An on-board serial port provides a connection for our Ethernet (IP) interface.  This Ethernet interface provides a means of communication for our programming software, ElkRP2, as well as our remote control software, M1ToGo.   Our line of wireless sensors communicates with the M1 system using our proprietary two-way wireless technology.

Do your products communicate with products from other manufacturers using a standard protocol? (which one)

ELK’s M1 controls integrate with products from over 40 other manufacturers.  Integration is achieved using a variety of connection methods and protocols.  Lighting is integrated via serial RS232 and partner protocols include Centralite (hardwired or Zigbee), Lutron RadioRA 2, Lutron Caséta, UPB and Z-Wave. INSTEON lighting is also supported through IP utilizing the Universal Devices ISY.   Thermostats are integrated using serial RS232/RS485. Hardwired thermostat partner protocols include Aprilaire, RCS and Leviton.  Wireless thermostat partner protocols include Lutron RadioRA 2 and Z-wave. Also supported are Z-wave locks and Lutron RadioRA 2/Caséta shades.   Whole house audio from NuVo, Proficient, and Russound is integrated through IP and serial RS232. Software, apps  and other partner interface devices communicate with M1 via IP and/or serial RS232 communications with a variety of partners including Connect ONE, eKeypad, M1 Touch Pro, AMX, Control 4, Crestron, and RTI just to name a few.  M1 systems can also be integrated with other devices using contact closures inputs and relay outputs.

In a short paragraph or 2 please describe how your products fit into a Smart Home scenario and how they are set up to work together to perform automated tasks.

As a Cross Platform Control, M1 uses an integration friendly approach to become the central nervous system for the home to control, schedule and monitor virtually everything electrical.  Integrating the sub systems of the home with the security system allows intelligent control of lights, shades, thermostats, locks, gates, sprinklers, water shutoff valves and more based on system arm state, zone state, active alarms, etc.   M1 features an astronomical clock allowing activation of devices based on sunrise and sunset, or light/dark conditions.  The M1 Rules Engine provides powerful programming with “Whenever/And/Then” logic for virtually limitless applications.  Clients have complete control with simple to use keypads, key fobs, and PC software; as well as, apps for smart phones and tablets, or Cloud services.

Every smart home needs smart security.  Recent news reports have raised concerns about conventional wireless products being susceptible to hacking and jamming attacks.  ELK’s Two-Way Wireless technology for M1 controls helps users avoid these vulnerabilities, offering a truly secure and reliable wireless solution.  ELK’s cutting edge techniques such as frequency hopping and UL approved jamming detection defend against interference, hacking, and jamming.  ELK also incorporates advanced features to ensure reliability, extend battery life, and provide innovative security enhancements including wirelessly interconnected smoke detectors, motion detectors with built-in security/convenience lights, and key fobs with a system status inquiry button, allowing users to see if an alarm has been activated before entering the home.
