We have worked with Lorex for years, so when researching various Video Baby Monitors I knew they would offer a quality affordable product. So a quick call over and within a few days I had their LIVE snap Video Baby Monitor, which at the time of publication is retailing at the Lorex website for $199.99. A search of some big box stores and online shows that this price point is about average for most mid-level baby monitors.

First things first, let’s go over the features of the LIVE snap, I pulled this information directly from the product webpage, and below that I will summarize my experience with these features.

Key Features:

Completely portable video baby monitor
Snapshot recording
Talk with Baby

Additional features:

Compact, rechargeable wireless camera and video monitor
Snap, store, and share images with microSD recording
2-way audio between the camera and video monitor
See baby at all times with automatic night vision
Secure, interference-free, long-range digital signal
High contrast, super bright 2.4″ LCD screen
Sound activated alerts so you don’t miss a thing, even overnight
Grows with your family, add up to 4 cameras
The setup of the product couldn’t be easier; there are just 3 components to the system; camera, video monitor and base charger. Set the camera up, charge the monitor and it is up and running. Immediately upon opening the box there were a few things that impressed me when comparing to some of the other monitors I have seeing. First was the size of the video monitor, about the size of the average cellphone it fits easy in your front or back pocket so you can keep it close while still working around the house. Secondly were the built-in rechargeable batteries in both the camera and the video monitor. This gives you total portability, so when we head over to the in-laws I can just grab the camera and monitor (leaving the cords). With a full charge the batteries should give you up to 5 hours (2.5hrs of the night vision use). The camera base also folds flush to the camera making it that a space saver as well.

Now of course the monitor allows you to see your baby on a high contrast 2.4″ color LCD. It also has automatic night vision and a secure, interference free, long range digital signal with a range up to 450ft with a clear line of sight. You are not often going to have clear line of sight, but you should still have plenty of range throughout your house and around the yard, for example I have a single story ranch style house on a 6000 square foot lot and I am able to get signal anywhere without interference. As well I haven’t experienced an issue with interference from other household appliances or wireless routers or speaker systems.

The video monitor is expandable to up to 4 cameras. At this point in my tiny house with just one baby I have no need for more. But I can imagine if I had 2 kids and a dog it would be very nice to be able to monitor 4 areas of the house simultaneously, and this system will allow you to upgrade to do that. An additional camera at the Lorex website cost $99.99 at the time of publication.

One of the unique features of the LIVE snap is the 2-way audio, so not only can you hear your baby, but with the push of a button on the video monitor you can communicate back through a small speaker on the camera. Your voice will sound a little like Darth Vader so you may want to limit singing lullabies with this method; however both my wife and I found it extremely useful for us to communicate to each other when one was in the nursery with the baby, so this is certainly a worthwhile feature.

The last feature of the LIVE snap I want to touch on is one that I haven’t seen on many if any other baby monitors. It is their Snapshot recording. It allows you to take pictures from the video monitor and store it directly on the included microSD™ card. The idea being you can capture your baby doing cute and amazing things on camera. This feature feels to me like more of an item of “flare” to help differentiate this product. While it is a nice added feature, the resolution of the photos is very low to allow rapid succession of pictures. This makes the picture quality just too low to blow up to a size beyond the 2.4″ screen, so the photos you take have a limited use such as quick upload to Facebook or Twitter.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this product for parents to be. It is easy to setup (plug & play), easy to operate and it does the job it is designed to do very well.
