1. What trends do you foresee in the power management category as large home theaters and automation systems become more mainstream?
As installations grow in size and scope, so to must the products that condition the AC line and protect against surges, sags, brownouts and other potentially damaging anomalies. In the past few years we have seen large systems grow from 5,000 watts to some that now top 50,000 watts. This can be a significant percentage of consumption for a home so it is imperative that PLCs keep up.

2. Smaller and less expensive power management accessories that protect the coax line have recently emerged. What are the benefits these products offer?
One of the most common issues in the set-up of home theaters is ground loops which can cause an incessant background hum in audio of scrolling bars on a video display. Many times a visit from the custom installer is required costing time and money without guarantee that the problem will get fixed. RGPC has addressed this with a simple device called the RGPC Eliminator that connects directly to the coax line to safely remove ground loops in a home theater.
When combined with the recently released RGPC TV Guard coax surge protector, the combination can effectively protect sensitive AV gear from catastrophic surges and maintain a connection to the Ground while eliminating the loops. 3. What is Parallel Power delivery and what advantages does it offer over power devices wired in the AC line?
Conventional series-based power products react to AC impurities and instabilities as they occur in real time. Unfortunately, they try to solve them by adding layers of electrical processing that cause impurities of their own. Worse, they apply unnecessary and undesirable impedance — note the root word, impede — that significantly reduces the source energy that components need to draw from. Conventional power products are fixes that simply cause different problems.

The results are clearly discernible compromises of dynamics of the picture and sound experience. Unfortunately, virtually every household and every A/V installation is subject to this problem.

5. What are the greatest challenges facing power component manufacturers at current?
The industry is really in its halcyon days â€“ there are so many new and exciting products coming on line now that it is hard to stay abreast of them all. Each new category of products brings their own problems to the AC line. For instance, PC based products are fantastic and taking our industry to new levels, but they have a detrimental impact on the AC line. Staying ahead of this and making sure your products compliment these new categories is a constant challenge for power component manufacturers..
6. What are the most pressing power-related issues facing A/V enthusiasts?
When new homes are built they must share the electricity from existing grids, so each home, as they install more and more power hungry digital and analog gear, is fighting to get enough current to power their larger and larger systems. Increased strain on our countries electrical grid creates a situation where common power anomalies such as surges, sags, and brownouts occur more frequently making the need for power management products that much greater. Even in your own home, power hungry devices such as dishwashers, dryers and central vacuum systems can create fluctuations in the flow of electricity causing inconsistent home theater performance.
On a positive note, the popularity of alternative energy sources such as windmills and solar panels is creating a market for large scale power storage and distribution devices. Homeowners will still need power when the sun stops shining and the wind’s not blowing. These devices will require far more capacity that the typical rack mountable UPS/storage device but will offer protection and conditioning for an entire circuit in a home.
7. Which components are the most vulnerable to damage from power fluctuations?
Any equipment with memory presets is susceptible since the presets can be scrambled or lost during a powerful surge or sudden outage. Likewise, any components that require fine tuning or advanced calibration can have performance thrown off by power related issues. Also at issue are the expensive bulbs in video projectors that get wiped out constantly due to power surges.
