While most cable manufacturers are still contemplating whether DisplayPort will take a strong foothold in the HD market, Atlona realizes that there is already a demand for DisplayPort cables if not for any other reason than the fact that there is a flood of new products hitting the market that use DisplayPort.
Users have been face with many new products over the last few years, including DVI, HDMI, Blu -Ray, and HD -DVD. Not all of these products have made it very far in the competitive markets, which has left many consumers cautious, not knowing if the "next great product" will be around tomorrow. The buzz circling DisplayPort is full of speculation; "do we really need another HD connection?", is a common question among many consumers. The fact is, DisplayPort, unlike HDMI is a license free format, meaning, unlike HDMI products, users who purchase DisplayPort products will not pay expensive royalty fees. In the long run this should make everything from display to graphics cards cheaper for consumers. In a preemptive step, Atlona Technologies is releasing DisplayPort cables, citing that as long as one of their customers has a need for one, they will carry them.
Atlona's DisplayPort cables (Model: AT16010 -X) will come in lengths ranging from 1 to 10 meters (3.3ft - 33ft), in male to male and male to female versions. Atlona's DisplayPort will be economically priced, starting at $39.00 (MSRP). These cables will become available by the end of June.
