Devices To Keep You Healthy And Fit Len Calderone for HomeToys

Apr 2013

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” – Jim Rohan
Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2013 Tradeshow Report Brandon Hetherington HomeToys

Feb 2013

ISE 2013 was the biggest yet. With 894 exhibitors occupying 33,000 net square meters of floor spaces. Thousands flocked to Amsterdam to catch up on all that is exciting in residential & commercial AV as well as digital signage.
Using Audio Visual In The Courtroom Len Calderone for HomeToys

Dec 2012

They say that justice is blind, but an attorney must approach a jury with both clear visuals and understandable audio to win his or her case. Therefore, the architect who is responsible for designing a new courtroom or a renovation must give serious consideration to the use of visuals and audio during a trial.
Luxul Networking Review Mark Anderson for HomeToys

Dec 2012

Like most people, in the past I’ve bought consumer grade from CISCO (formerly LinkSys), Netgear, D-Link, etc. I’ve grown increasingly dissatisfied with these as time goes by. I’ve run across Luxul networking products in several pro-installations so when I got the chance to try them for myself, I jumped at the chance.
Laser Phosphor Display Screens Len Calderone for HomeToys

Dec 2012

LPD walls are larger than the largest LCD screens, far brighter than projection screens, and far more detailed than LED displays. LPD displays have no bezels, allowing the image to extend to the edge of the glass, resulting in displays that can be lined up in stacks or rows to form a single image, as large as desired.
Is your house flood proof? Len Calderone for HomeToys

Dec 2012

The only time you will see a difference between a floating house and the traditional one is during floods — when your house rises above the water and your neighbor's stays put and slowly sinks under the water.
Dream kitchens of the Future Len Calderone for HomeToys

Dec 2012

Is the next step in our kitchen of the future replication of food, similar to Star Trek? Just maybe. We have 3-D printing for solid objects; can food be far behind?

CABA Digital Home Forum Bob Hetherington HomeToys

Oct 2012

CABA has always done a great service to the industy by organizing and hosting these forums and conferences where players in the industry can get together on neutral turf to share their experiences, concerns and expertise. As a great believer in sharing technical expertise, in fact it's what this publication is based on, I am always keen to hear what others are working on and where the industry is going.
Audio Visual Technology in Medicine Len Calderone for HomeToys

Oct 2012

AV technology is used throughout modern medical facilities, providing everything from wayfinding, to scheduling, conferencing, remote to specialist equipment and subject matter experts.
Spotlight on Ultraviolet Mark Anderson - Managing Editor HomeToys

Feb 2012

Spotlight on Ultraviolet Ultraviolet promises to be the digital movie locker in the cloud. Momentum seems to be gathering with a few major players (Samsung, Amazon and Paramount) signing up recently. I decided to take it for a spin and see if the reality matched the PR hype.
Is Windows Media Center Alive? Mark Anderson - Managing Editor HomeToys

Feb 2012

Windows Media Center is one of the best and most underrated products produced by Microsoft. As a cord-cutter, I use it as my TV guide, DVR and a whole lot more. In the last few months, I’ve attempted to find three key plug-ins. Not one exists. It seems developers interests lie elsewhere these days. So is this a nail in WMC’s coffin. I hope not.

On Energy Management, Manufacturing and Factory Automation Bob Hetherington HomeToys

Oct 2011

It's not enough to monitor our energy use. We don't really care about that unless it does something to change our lives or save us money. So, let's put a solar system on the roof. Now that can do both of these things and should attract our attention. But let's take it a step further. With that solar system there is a new variable in the mix --- FREE CLEAN ENERGY. What can and should we do with it.

Streaming Content - Why and How? Bob Hetherington HomeToys

Jun 2010

Supposedly now --- life is better. I should be able to stream content including TV, movies, news, music and everything else --- from the internet directly to my entertainment system. I should also be able to do all the old stuff too including listen and watch the movies and music which I purchased and stored on my hard drive. So, since I are an engineer, I'm going to break everything down into point form and see if I can make sense of all of these options --- oh and by the way --- I know you can do all this internet stuff with a phone too but I'm not even going to go there at this point in time :-(

HomeToys.com Retro - TIVO Brandon Hetherington HomeToys

Jun 2010

HomeToys.com is approaching its 14 year anniversary. A virtual internet dinosaur, HomeToys published its completely online magazine for the first time on October 1, 1996, and since that time we have published thousands of articles, interviews, reviews and more.

We thought it would be fun to look back and see how we did. We will take a look at some of the early technologies we reviewed, predictions our writers made and all and all just take a trip down Home Technologies memory lane.

Paradigm Stylus 370 Oudoor Speakers Bob Hetherington HomeToys

Apr 2010

Summer is on the way so it's time to start thinking about taking your entertainment outside. Outdoor speakers are a special case and of course can cause special problems when it comes to weathering the storm. They not only need to sound good up close, but they also need to project that sound into a void.
Paradigm CS-60R-30 Ceiling Speakers Bob Hetherington HomeToys

Apr 2010

Ceiling speakers for home theaters and multi-room systems have caught on in ways I'm sure make hard core audiophiles cringe. Who would have thought that anyone would even consider getting theater quality sound from a drywall ceiling? After all, weren't they invented for airport PA systems --- and we all know that you can't make out anything that is said over those things.
Onkyo TX-NR3007 Home Theater Receiver Bob Hetherington HomeToys

Apr 2010

I'm obviously into networking since we have our business at home and work continuously on the internet. Any my absolute favorite internet magic app is Pandora internet radio. But, I also have a fairly large music collection residing on a network storage device (NAS). I was eager to put the NR-3007 to the test so one of the first things I did was to plug it into our home network via the ethternet connection. I had to look up a few instructions in the manual but basically the receiver just connected to the network and looked around for devices.
Definitive Technology Home Theater Speakers Bob Hetherington HomeToys

Apr 2010

When you set up a home theater system what is the most important component? This is one fact that has not changed since the days of old --- ITSS (It's The Speakers Stupid).
Avtrak Rotating Equipment Rack Bob Hetherington HomeToys

Highlights from Cedia Expo 2008 Bob Hetherington Hometoys

Sep 2008

I was a bit worried that I would find an economically battered battle field full of horror stories and spilled blood. I was pleasantly surprised to find lots of optomism, some great success stories and the same old entepeneurial spirit that keeps me enthralled with this industry. Yes, there were a few sad faces and sad stories ... but not nearly as many as I had expected. In fact the general consensus for me was ... business as usual ... in many respects.
Z-Wave Lighting Control Systems Bob Hetherington HomeToys

Aug 2008

I have had the opportunity to review some Z-Wave equipment and I must say I'm impressed with the simplicity of the system. After all ... lighting control and automation should not be rocket science ... and in it's simplest form I tend to think it should become standard in all new construction.

NuVision 47LCM1 Deep Black 1080p LCD HDTV Monitor Brandon Hetherington HomeToys

Apr 2007

Being a sports fanatic my first test would be an NBA game in HDTV. NuVision Monitors display HDTV in 1080p, and the industries brightest panel provides a clear, bright and crisp picture superior to any others I have seen. With the fast NBA action no noticeable artifacts could be seen.
Editorial Comments Bob Hetherington HomeToys

Apr 2007

It's already daylight saving time where I live. Did your PVR / Media Server / Home Automation Controller know about the change? A minor headache if not ... but a headache none the less. The more spoiled we become ... the more spoiled we want to become and the more dependent we get on technology. I'll leave it to philosophers to decide whether that is a good thing or not.

The remote itself is very nice to use ... the buttons are slick and the LCD screen is clear. Having a recharging station is terrific too. I never lose the remote any more, it's always ready to go and I never have to worry about changing batteries. The IR signals are stronger than any other unit I've tried so it never fails to do it's job. Just picking up or tilting the unit brings on the LCD screen ... no buttons to push for that ... nice!
