Plasma TVs - Installation Considerations If you consider these issues in the design and building process, you'll be assured of the outstanding performance you expect. |

The use of a Plasma HDTV monitor display can provide the homeowner with the ultimate in video viewing. This wide-screen display (typically 37" to 63" diagonal screen, but yes there is even an 84" unit) features high-resolution, extremely sharp contrast, and an exceptionally bright picture, even in rooms with lots of light.
With a thin profile of approximately 4" deep, these monitors are great for mounting above fireplaces. Not only can you watch TV, you can have it set -up to display your favorite artwork or even tie it into your home computer. Just imagine - a 61" monitor! Control it with a wireless keyboard, sit back and enjoy. The Right Cabling A Plasma TV is like a fast car- it needs the right fuel. If you haven't cabled properly, you won't get the high-resolution, quality picture you expect. Bottomline - RG6 coax cable doesn't cut it.
S-Video, better yet, component video, RGB, CAT5E or CAT6. Even if you don't cable now, you should provide a cable chase from the mantel area to the room equipment / cabinet area.
Planning Ahead

What
do you run then?
Since
most HDTV Plasmas are monitors, they don't have built-in amplifiers
(several models do, however, power output is limited due to individual
unit heat generation, size and weight). Now you have to consider a
surround sound amplifier, speakers and placement, in addition to other
video sources such as DVD, S-VHS, TiVO and the ideal location of this
equipment for convenient access (do you really want to go all the way to
the basement to change DVDs?).
Plan ahead on how the display will be mounted. If there is any framing
involved, install the necessary additional strength members or blocking
that will accommodate the plasma mount, whether it's a fixed mount, tilt
mount or articulated one. Remember - these units are heavy. For the
electric install a recessed clock outlet.
